They feature the case because the story attracts viewers. It has lements of crime, sex, class, and race all rolled into a big, sordid mess. The prosecutor and the defense attorneys ahve been duking things out in the press, the Durham community has been up in arms, the Long Island communities where the biys are from have been showing vocal support. All this becasue of an incident at one of the nation’s most prestigious universities.

so, to answer your question, the case is genuine, in the sense that something bad probably did happen, though no one knows if a crime was actually committed. The media are going crazy over it becasue it attracts viewers and that lets Fox sell more advertising for more money.

The whole case is a big fat mess though. Sad for all parties, in my opinion.
